Our native quail Koreke was extinct by 1875, having met a dramatic decline through the introduction of cats, rats, along side sport hunting. The Look Out is a California or Sentinel Quail, introduced in the 1860s as game birds. In a rare example of an introduced species causing no harm to the new environment, the California Quail slipped happily and successfully into the same habitat as its native predecessors.
The Three alludes the fact that there were many more babies in the clutch; perhaps a line of a dozen little chicks trailing after their parents.  By the time they reach this age there are usually just two or three surviving.
