 A Duck, Two Petrels and a Plover… memorialises four bird species once found on the Auckland Islands but now extinct from the archipelago: the Auckland Island merganser, South Georgia diving petrel, white-faced storm petrel and Ross’s plover (New Zealand shore plover).

The work’s title is drawn from a phrase in Holocene Bird Bones Found at the Subantarctic Auckland Islands, an article by Te Papa ornithologist Alan J. D. Tennyson:

“Today this island group has a rich seabird and land-bird fauna, although there have been at least four bird extinctions (a duck, two petrels and a plover) due to predation by introduced mammals and hunting by humans.”
