The Price of Milk
(2025 )

2025, cast bronze

limited numbered editions

Milk, cream and quart bottles cast in bronze. At a closer look the usual raised text has been subverted to depict the names in te reo maori of plants that have been displaced by the dairy industry. Among them kahikatea, rimu, kauri, whau, pohuehue and tororaro.

The work has its roots in my final-year project at Elam, The Art for Trees Project  for which I slip-cast 450 ceramic bottles. For every bottle sold, a tree was planted on the banks of the Waihou River, where Captain Cook and Joseph Banks made one of their few landings. They were both to write in their journals along the lines of  ‘cut down the trees, drain the swamps, it’ll be ideal for pasture’. That vision was later enacted across the plains and throughout much of New Zealand.
